Prof Paul Bertsch – Queensland Chief Scientist, Queensland Government | AUSTRALIAProfessor Paul Bertsch was appointed as interim Queensland Chief Scientist in February 2019.Paul is also Deputy Director-Science of the Land and Water Business Unit at CSIRO where he led a team of approximately 650 scientists and technical specialists from across CSIRO working on the stewardship of land and water resources, ecosystems and the built environment.
He has championed interdisciplinary and cross-agency science approaches to address the significant challenges facing Australia and the world, specifically around the environment, natural resource management and sustainability.
Prior to joining CSIRO in 2013, Paul was the Director of the Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment and Professor of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology at the University of Kentucky, Lexington.
Prof Bertsch has 30 years of experience in the fields of soil science, environmental geochemistry and toxicology. He has significant international science administration, leadership and policy experience, and has built links to key leaders in federal and various state science agencies. Paul has authored or co-authored more than 300 scientific and technical publications, and has held numerous executive roles for national and international scientific committees.
Dr. James Brown – Co-Founder & CTO, Bondi Bio | AUSTRALIAJames is an experienced genetic engineer, who has helped catalyse the emergence of Synthetic Biology on the national & international stage. He has held senior roles bridging both the technical, political & business aspects of this burgeoning discipline.In 2018, he co-founded Bondi Bio, a Sydney-based bioengineering start-up. Bondi is genetically-engineering blue-green algae - or ‘cyanobacteria’ - to produce high-value plant-derived Natural Products from light and carbon dioxide. James is Chief Technology Officer at Bondi, where he is strategically leading the company towards their research and development goals, with aspirations for Bondi to play a key role in the development of Australia’s circular bioeconomy.James served as National Programme Director for UK Synthetic Biology & was Secretariat to the UK’s Synthetic Biology Leadership Council, where he supported the implementation of the UK’s Strategic Roadmap in Synthetic Biology. James worked in Microsoft Research’s Biological Computation Group & spent time in Saudi Arabia, working to generate sustainable biomanufacturing solutions for global chemical producer SABIC. He was an iGEM Ambassador during the formative years of the competition, and was Principal Advisor to the University of Cambridge iGEM teams from 2007 through 2010, including the award-winning E. chromi team in 2009. He organised the formative BioSysBio conference series and led the 2012 Cambridge BioDesign Forum, which examined the role of the bioengineer in the 21st century and their part in building a sustainable future.Prior to founding Bondi Bio, James was the architect of a new wet lab facility, DNA repository & design workflow at world-leading technical-consultancy Cambridge Consultants. There he took the technical lead on a range of projects including HT characterisation platforms, novel strain-engineering, cell-free sensing & DNA data-storage, culminating in the successful authorship of Wikipedia within a DNA medium.During his PhD, James developed tools for the design and characterisation of a new generation of genetic circuits, driving Turing pattern formation in engineered microbial populations. He holds an MEng, MA and PhD from the University of Cambridge.
Cr. Matt Burnett – Mayor, Gladstone Regional Council | AUSTRALIAGladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett is a born and bred resident and his family's connection with the region extends to five generations. He is a former small business operator and qualified journalist, having started his own newspaper, The Port Curtis Post, at the age of 19.He has since served in Local Government since 2000, including five as Deputy Mayor prior to his election as Mayor. During his time in Local Government, Cr Burnett served as Chairman of Technical Services with Gladstone City Council and as portfolio representative in Technical Services, Infrastructure Services and Town Planning with Gladstone Regional Council after amalgamation in 2008.Cr Burnett has always had the best interests of the community at heart and, as Mayor, he draws upon the experience he has gathered over his years in Council to ensure those interests remain a key consideration even as the region continues to grow and develop.Cr Burnett brings an inclusive style of leadership to Council, making sure the thoughts and views of his fellow Councillors, Council officers, business and industry leaders, community groups and organisations, and members of the community are all heard and taken into consideration.Cr Burnett has learnt much from the three Mayors who he has worked with since being elected to Council and will look to put what he has learned to good use during his tenure as Mayor, in order to provide the strong leadership needed to enable the Gladstone Region to shine at its best.
Cr Burnett also represents Central Queensland on the Local Government Association of Queensland Policy Executive and is an alternate Board member of the Australian Local Government Association. He is a Board Member of the Gladstone Foundation Board of Advice and a member of the Queensland Government’s Energy Skills Advisory Committee.
Dr. Yoshiyuki Fujishima – Senior Analyst, Bioeconomy Unit, Technology Strategy Center | JAPANThe Technology Strategy Centre is a research institution that works on the formulation of technical strategies in the fields of industrial technology, energy and environmental technology, and the planning of projects based on this through research and research. The centre aims to investigate and analyse trends in domestic and overseas technology strategy information by developing and maintaining cross-sectional project management methods. Dr. Yoshiyuki Fujishima works within the Bioeconomy Unit of the centre in Japan.
Dylan Gower – CLEAN Cowra | AUSTRALIADylan Gower is principal of d‐CONSTRUCT architects and a director of the CORRIDOR project a not-profit organisation, currently based in the Central West NSW.Dylan is co- founder of CLEAN Cowra Inc, a community enterprise developing a unique model for a regional Biomass to energy project, utilising agricultural residues and organic waste for resource conversion as a decentralised energy option.For over twenty years in practice, he has been advocating for Ecological Sustainable Development, highlighting its principles in relation to urban and regional environments. Conducting ongoing research, he continues to explore further models of design thinking and place- making benefitting Australian communities.
Dr Patrick Gruber– CEO and Board Member, Gevo | USADr. Gruber, CEO and Board Member of Gevo, has spent over 30 years developing and commercializing renewable biobased technologies to replace petrochemicals. His teams have developed and commercialized several renewable resource-based products including organic acids, plastics, fibers, advanced alcohols, hydrocarbon fuels, and the like. Gruber led the development and commercialization of PLA at Cargill, and co-founded Natureworks. As CEO of Gevo, Dr. Gruber leads the business to commercialize isobutanol for gasoline blendstock, renewable low carbon jet fuel, and low carbon renewable gasoline.Dr. Gruber received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota, and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Minnesota. He also earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.Dr. Gruber has received numerous awards including: The George Washington Carver Award from BIO, The Presidential Green Chemistry Award, The Discover Award for Environmental Innovation from Discover Magazine, The Lee W. Rivers Innovation Award from CDMA, a Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of MN in 2011, The Julius Steiglitz Award from the University of Chicago, The Kirkpatrick Award from Chemical Engineering, Design and Engineering Award from Popular Mechanics, Technology of the Year Award from Industry Week, Technology of the Year Award from United States DOE, and numerous others. Dr. Gruber was the editor the two volume book “Biorefineries—Industrial Processes and Products”, and holds more than 60 US patents, with a number of others pending.
Leanne Kemp – Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneur, Queensland Government | AUSTRALIALeanne Kemp is Founder and CEO of Everledger and Queensland’s third Chief Entrepreneur. She is a highly regarded leader in many fields including technology and insurance, and well-known for her innovations using Blockchain technology to track high-value assets such as diamonds, art and wine. Leanne works on a global scale to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation and is an advocate of sustainability in business.
Leanne is an expert advisor to the World Economic Forum, the World Trade Board’s Sustainable Trade Action Group and the IBM Blockchain Platform Board of Advisors. She was also recently appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Institute for Future Environment at the Queensland University of Technology. Leanne has won many awards including Innovator of the Year twice.
Stefan Lampel – Project Management Agency, Federal Ministry of Education and Research | GERMANYDr. Stefan Lampel studied biology at the Universität des Saarlandes in Germany with focus on biochemistry, molecular and human biology. He made his PhD at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in the Department of Prof. Lichter “Organisation of Complex Genomes”.
From 1998-2000 Dr. Lampel worked as Post-Doc at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in the field of cancer diagnostics. In 2000 he joined Ingenium Pharmaceutical AG as Director of Automation. Since 2004 he is working for Project Management Jülich (Projektträger Jülich) as Head of Division “EU & International Affairs”. The Division supports the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) by administrating research funding and a series of European and International co-ordination initiatives in the field of research and research funding in the bio-economy.
Dr Elspeth MacRae – Chief Innovation and Science Officer, Scion | NEW ZEALANDCurrently the Chief Innovation and Science Officer, leading innovation activity across forest growing and bioproduct manufacturing activities. She led definition of Scion’s recent 2030 strategy reshape on transitioning NZ to a Circular Bioeconomy. Previously she was responsible for biorefinery, bioenergy, biodiscovery and bioplastics, packaging, 3 and 4D printing, clean technology, wood and fibre and biotech/omics activities from discovery to commercialisation. Elspeth has published over 100 refereed manuscripts in a wide range of subject areas mostly plant or biochemistry based (H factor 41), has mentored postgraduates and early career researchers and maintains strategic relationships with a range of key clients both locally and internationally. She was part of the team negotiating licensing of a wood fibre plastic technology to a large international firm, as well as negotiation in commercialisation of a range of technologies.She is on the management team for the National Science Challenge in Science and Technology for Industry focussing on materials, design and manufacturing. She was Deputy Chair of the Biopolymer Network Ltd Board until August 2019, and is a member of the New Zealand Packaging Council governance group. She is on the International Advisory committee for the Global Bioeconomy Summit, and cochairs the International Bioeconomy Forum forest bioeconomy working group with Canada. These recent global initiatives focus on replacing the petroleum/mineral/chemical/energy manufacturing activities with biobased substitutes and alternative approaches to manufacturing.She is New Zealand’s representative on the EPSO committee 2008-2019, co-leads the forest working group and is on the agricultural technologies committee. She was deputy for IUFRO Bioenergy 2010-2014. She has represented Scion in biotechnology policy issues for 13 years, has sat on multiple grants panels and review activities including as an MBIE assessor for both Science Excellence and Impact, participated in international governmental delegations and provided futures activities previously for the NZ government for six years. She delivered an Industrial Biotechnology futures project for the OECD (Bioeconomy to 2030) and reviewed the EU Biorefinery roadmap to 2030. Most recently she has reviewed the German Helmholtz Institute’s Bioeconomy research, sits on the Board for the EU virtual pilot plant programme IBISBA, reviewed the Royal Society Publication on Plastics in the Environment and is on the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisors Rethink Plastics panel. Most recent presentations have been on Disruptions in Manufacturing and Genetic Technologies to PEFC (Zurich) as well as NZ Ministers (Royal Society Speakers Programme), Hugo Group at their CEO retreat, Plenary Panel on Bioeconomy at the Alpbach Forum in Austria and NZ-Japan Business Council meeting in Tokyo.

Shahana McKenzie – CEO, Bioenergy Australia | AUSTRALIAShahana has the responsibility for leading Bioenergy Australia’s contribution on matters such as climate science, jobs creation, regional development, and energy supply, to ensure national benefits for the next decade and beyond. An immediate priority for Bioenergy Australia is to ensure bioenergy features prominently in considerations at all levels of government as they plan and implement energy strategies and policies. Shahana led the development of the KPMG State of the Nation report, Biogas Opportunities for Australia report and recently instigated the creation of the Trans Tasman Sustainable Aviation Fuel Alliance, bringing airlines, airports and governments together within the region to progress the development of a sustainable aviation fuel industry. In addition to this, she has led the organisation growing significantly in membership and industry engagement.
Prof Ian O’Hara – Biofutures Industry Envoy, Queensland Government | AUSTRALIAProfessor Ian O’Hara is a Principal Research Fellow specialising in industrial biotechnology and bioprocess engineering at Queensland University of Technology. Ian’s research interests includes biofuels and bioenergy, biorefining and bioproducts, process engineering, scale-up and techno-economic assessment of new technologies. In 2016, Ian was appointed by the Queensland Government as the Queensland Biofutures Industry Envoy. As the Envoy, Ian provides strategic advice to government and assists in securing domestic and international investment within the Biofutures sector. Ian is a Director of Bioenergy Australia.
Kylie Porter – CEO, Greater Whitsunday Alliance | AUSTRALIAKylie Porter is the interim CEO of Greater Whitsunday Alliance, the peak economic development organisation for Mackay Isaac Whitsunday. With more than 25 years professional marketing and corporate communications experience, Kylie is well versed on all the big issues facing business today and is currently the Chairman of the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday BioFutures Steering Committee. She also sits on the board of Regional Development Australia and is the Board Chairman of C-Res, a company which delivers the Local Buying Program across Australia in partnership with BHP.
Dr Peter Riddles – Science-Innovation Systems; Governance and Policy; Global Outreach | AUSTRALIA/UKDr Riddles began his career as a research scientist in molecular biology in the public sector holding positions at the University of Queensland, Stanford University and the CSIRO. Since then, he has accumulated decades of experience in the life sciences industry in Australia and internationally having provided leadership to diverse organisations including biotechnology start-up companies, industry organisations, and University Commercial Offices. His current priorities include working with clinical entrepreneurs in enterprise creation and maintaining an interest in innovation policy and practice. In this regard he is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts (FRSA) (UK), a Member of Chatham House (UK), and a Fellow of the California Technology Council (CA, USA). Other current roles include Member of the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) in Australia, chairing its Experimental Development Program, Director of The Hear and Say Centre for Deaf Children (Brisbane, Australia), Advisor to digital health start-up BetterBySport (Bern, Switzerland) and Member of the Council of Reference to Academic Health Solutions (London, UK).
Mr Tetsuya Tanaka – Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry | JAPANMr. Tanaka was appointed as Director for Bio-Industry Division, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Government of Japan in July 2019. Mr. Tanaka has over 25 years of work experience in various public policy fields, including mineral resources and energy policy, R&D policy, technical standards and conformity assessment policy, and manufacturing promotion policy. Prior to the current assignment, he was in charge of science, technology and innovation policy in the Cabinet Office.
Prof. Emeritus Dr. Morakot Tanticharoen – Senior Advisor to the President of NSTDA, National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) | THAILANDAfter completing biology studies at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, Prof. Morakot Tanticharoen was appointed as a research assistant at the University of Rhode Island in the United States where she completed her post-graduate studies.
On returning to Thailand, Prof. Morakot was offered the position at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi (presently King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi – KMUTT) where she has co-founded the School of Energy and Materials & the Division of Biotechnology in this school, which was later transformed into the School of Bioresources and Technology. From over two decades of contributing to KMUTT, Morakot has served as Dean of the School of Bioresources and Technology, as well as the School of Energy and Materials, and in so doing has provided guidance as advisor or co-advisor to over one hundred post-graduate theses anddissertations.
Prof. Morakot herself is a leading researcher in Thailand in the field of microbiology and biotechnology. She is also well recognized for her involvement at the regional and internationallevel, being an active member and working on the executive of several societies and organizations, as well as serving on the editorial board of a number of noted international journals. Morakot was BIOTEC Director from 2000 – 2008. During her directorship, she also served as Chairman of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Biotechnology (SCB), from 2005- 2008.At present, Prof. Morakot is the senior advisor to NSTDA President. She also serves as the senior advisor to KMUTT President and the Professor Emeritus at the School of Bioresources andTechnology, KMUTT.
Adjunct Prof. Chris Tindal– Institute for Future Environments | USAChris Tindal received an appointment as the Strategic Biofutures Advisor to the State of Queensland. He provides a direct in-market connection between the Queensland Government and key industry stakeholders, both globally and domestically, but particularly within North America with a view to helping cement business relationships and projects for Queensland. The role was created to help identify and target strategic opportunities for North American-based biofutures organizations to establish operations in Queensland.Chris is the Assistant Director for the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) whose goal is to promote the development and commercialization of alternative jet fuel options that offer equivalent levels of safety and compare favorably on cost with petroleum based jet fuel, while also offering environmental improvement and security of energy supply for aviation. He helps to manage the coalition of CAAFI stakeholders and provide leadership and strategic guidance to CAAFI's State and Regional programs, Federal government interagency initiatives, airport authorities, and International initiatives consistent with CAAFI priorities.Chris is an Adjunct Professor on the faculty of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Queensland. In that role, Professor Tindal assists in exploring research and development opportunities for QUT, as well as investigating potential opportunities to establish commercial-scale biorefineries in the State of Queensland.Chris retired as the Director for Operational Energy underneath the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Navy for Energy, where he was in charge of setting energy policy and direction for the Department of the Navy and promoting the adoption of alternative fuels and renewable energy resources. Additionally, he developed intergovernmental, international, and industry relationships throughout the energy field. He was the Navy leader of the pioneering U.S. Department of Agriculture/ U.S. Department of Energy/ U.S. Navy Alternative Fuels Initiative which developed programs to launch the advanced biofuels industry. In his role, Chris successfully led the Great Green Fleet effort, in which the U.S. Navy acquired and used 77 million gallons of F-76 alternative fuel blend for their ships in the Great Green Fleet deployment in 2016.He has had the honor to be named in the peer-selected competition for the "Top 100 People in the Bioeconomy" Awards by the Biofuels Digest from 2013 through 2017.Chris Tindal was a Navy man for over 40 years. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1980 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and served on Active Duty on two ships in Charleston, South Carolina. He retired as a Captain in the Navy Reserves in 2010. Originally from Alabama, Chris currently lives in South Carolina.
Ben van Delden – Head of AgriFood Tech, KPMG | AUSTRALIAFor more than 19 years at KPMG, Ben has specialised in providing audit, accounting, innovation and business growth services to public and private organisations operating in agribusiness, consumer and industrial markets, transport and logistics, entertainment, media and real estate. Ben is a chartered accountant and has worked on various client assignments in markets across Australia, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and South America.
Driven by a clear sense of purpose and a passion for the agribusiness sector, Ben has worked extensively in this sector on both sides of the Tasman. He was a judge and steering committee member of the New Zealand Food Awards and active participant in New Zealand’s agribusiness industry before relocating to Australia in 2014, where he now leads KPMG’s AgriFood Tech sector team and SmartFarming IoT business. Raised in an entrepreneurial family, Ben has worked in family businesses in aquaculture, livestock, horticulture, tourism and food. Ben enjoys applying these startup skills to the emerging fields of AgriFood Tech and SmartFarming, developing solutions to sector challenges and opportunities.
As Head of Markets for KPMG Australia, Ben and his specialist business development teams work to support clients build, protect and realise their value. He works closely with counterparts across KPMG’s regional and global network to ensure KPMG clients access the specialist expertise needed for them to prosper across the markets important to them.

A/Prof Claudia Vickers – Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform Leader, CSIRO | AUSTRALIAAssociate Professor Vickers holds dual roles as Director of the Synthetic Biology Future Platform at CSIRO (Australia’s Federal research agency) and Group Leader at The University of Queensland’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN). She completed her PhD in cereal crop biotechnology at CSIRO Plant Industry and UQ in 2004. She held a post-doctoral positions at The University of Queensland and Essex University where she worked on plant physiology, abiotic stress and the metabolic regulation of volatile isoprenoids. She returned to Australia and joined AIBN in 2007, where she now leads the Synthetic Biology and Isoprenoids group. Her research program focuses on understanding isoprenoid pathway metabolism and rational engineering to re-design organisms for production of industrially-useful isoprenoids. Isoprenoids (terpenes) are a large group of natural products with multitude biological (signals, membrane components, location tags, electron transport components, pigments, etc.) and industrial applications (e.g. biofuels, agricultural chemicals, flavours, fragrances, pharmaceuticals, food additives). She also works extensively in synthetic biology tool development. Since January 2017 Associate Professor Vickers has held a joint appointment with the Commonwealth Science and Industry Research Organisation (CSIRO) to lead the CSIRO Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform (SynBioFSP), a $60 M research and development program aimed at expanding Australia’s capability in synthetic biology. She leads the CSIRO-UQ Synthetic Biology Alliance and is director of the CSIRO-UQ BioFoundry. She is also on the Executive of Synthetic Biology Australasia.
Brett Wiskar – Chief Future Officer, Wiley | AUSTRALIABrett Wiskar is The Chief Future Officer and leader of the business advisory unit at food focused consultancy, Wiley. Wiley is based in Australia and with offices across the region stretching into South East Asia where they consult to food infrastructure projects to multi-nationals and local companies alike.
With more than 20 years of consulting experience in digital, IT, strategy and innovation working with the likes of Dominos, Adobe, Computer Associates, The Reserve Bank of Australia, Nestle, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kraft, JBS and Mars, Brett is adept in the world of international innovation and strategy.
In this time - Brett has provided consulting and business advisory to some of the most influential projects in Australian corporations across dozens of sectors. From the world’s largest cannabis production facility and projects exceeding one billion dollars to the country’s first augmented reality innovation coalition for food to the largest ecommerce solutions in the country, Brett’s innovative achievements have been widely recognised.
Brett is a prolific writer, having produced content for all of Australia’s major industry magazines, and the national press and business focused editorial television. Brett’s grasp of the challenges and opportunities of innovation and disruption is only superseded by his ability to eloquently articulate both experiences of innovation and opportunity to be gained from changing the status quo in a business.

Prof. Bo Yu – Executive Deputy Director, CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence | CHINADr. Bo Yu obtained his academic training at Shandong University, China. After completion of his PhD thesis in 2006, he moved to Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS). In 2008, he started his Post-doc research for two years at German Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research and Hamburg University of Technology, both funded by German Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. From Oct. 2010, Dr. Bo Yu returned to IMCAS and leaded the research group. His research interests are in industrial biotechnology, especially in the aspect of systems metabolic engineering of strains for production of bio-based products. In 2016, he was promoted to be the full professor in IMCAS.
From 2014, Dr. Bo Yu served as the Deputy Director and later as Executive Director of CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Biotechnology (CoEBio), which the center is focusing on strategic intelligence and international collaboration on bioeconomy as well as industrial biotechnology, both for developing and developed countries.
