Clive Berghofer named Community Philanthropist of the Year

Medical research philanthropist recognised in Queensland awards

Clive Berghofer OAM has been named 2024 Queensland Community Philanthropist of the Year.

Mr Berghofer has donated about $61 million to the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, about $10m to the Royal Flying Doctors, and more than $2m to LifeFlight, as well as supporting many community charities in his home town of Toowoomba.

Mr Berghofer is one of Australia’s biggest individual contributors to medical research.

Former QIMR Director Professor Frank Gannon said of Mr Berghofer’s 2013 donation of $50.1 million, “Simply put, Clive Berghofer is a truly great Australian. He has single-handedly transformed medical research in Australia and we will all benefit from his generosity.”

TheAward judges noted that Mr Berghofer’s philanthropic leadership was deeply rooted in his personal journey from humble beginnings.

“To date he has donated more than $100m to charitable causes, but his commitment to the community extends beyond monetary donations,” the comments read.

“As a patron and life member of numerous organisations, Clive has generously provided his time and insights, inspiring many with his life story.”
