Queensland's health and medical research expertise is built upon a foundation of molecular biologists, bio-informatics and proteomics experts. The State has a global reputation in cell-based technologies, and as a producer of high-quality health and therapeutic products, including but not limited to diagnostics, genomics, vaccines, novel medical devices, natural products, clinical trials and regulatory support services. Queensland's researchers are also world leaders in viral, bacterial and parasitic infection research, with tropical diseases being a particular strength.Australia's healthcare market is the 12th largest in the world, with expenditure of approximately AU$154.6 billion in 2013-2014, representing 9.8 per cent of GDP. Comparatively, the Queensland Government has invested more than AU$3 billion in research and innovation since 1998, supporting a collaborative network of research institutes and precincts across the State.
