Environmental Biotechnology

Environmental biotechnology is the use of living organisms or biological processes in a wide variety of applications across many industries. Biotechnology can be applied to industrial processes to improve their efficiency and effectiveness, and to sustain and manage the environment as well as solve environmental problems.Of Queensland's 1,383 regional ecosystems in protected areas, 89 are classified as 'endangered' and 531 are classified as 'of concern'.Queensland’s ecosystems are under threat, but environmental biotechnology could be the key to not only preserving these precious environments, but also to dealing with the environmental realities of the 21st century.Environmental biotechnology has many applications in waste treatment and pollution prevention and management. The environmental biotechnology process of bioremediation is used to clean up waste more efficiently than conventional methods, and reduces our dependence on land-based disposal.
