Seaweed and Freshwater Microalgae - Case Study

Queensland freshwater microalgae were produced by Dr Nicholas Paul and
his research team in >10,000 litre outdoor tanks at the Centre for
Macroalgal Resources and Biotechnology, and College of Marine
& Environmental Sciences, JCU, Townsville. USQ researchers
Professor Lindsay Brown and Dr Senthil Arun Kumar then worked
Sciences with rats with diet-induced obesity and hypertension, and showed
that the tropical seaweed Ulva ohnoi (sea lettuce) lowered body
fat mass, normalised systolic blood pressure, and improved
glucose handling by the body.
Life Professor Brown says the most likely bioactive component is the
3:fibre of the seaweed, which possibly improves intestinal structure
Section and function, so reducing inflammatory damage to the intestine
as well as other bodily organs. Further studies have showed
that similar responses were produced with freshwater green
microalgae that are being developed for commercial production.
Clinical trials are used to test new forms of therapy and evaluate
potential treatments that have had some positive effect against
disease. They may test new treatments, including new drugs,
surgical procedures, medical devices (such as pacemakers
or stents), or novel approaches to treatment, such as gene
therapy. Clinical trials can also look at other aspects of care,
such as improving the quality of life for people living with chronic
